Carrer Llimons de La Vila is one of the streets with the most history and most emblematic of the city. The road runs practically parallel to the Amadorio river and in it the commercial life of the municipality was forged for almost 3,000 years. The current Doctor Álvaro Esquerdo street hides in its foundations part of the history of the town that will now see the light thanks to a project from the municipal archive.
The name of â??Llimonsâ?? (Limones street) does not respond to anything other than the lemon trees that filled it years ago and from there it took its popular name. Currently it is called Calle Doctor Álvaro Esquerdo but the other name continues to be used.
But what is the origin of Carrer Llimons? The street has a long history as a commercial road in La Vila, dating its existence more than 2,500 years ago, which
It would make it one of the oldest streets in La Vila.
The works of the new river park made in 2010 brought to light a carved ashlar terrace that supported a very old path. This road, on the south bank, went down from Calvario street and, after fording the riverbed (a few meters downstream from the railway bridge), it went up on the opposite side by the 'Camí de Costes' to connect with Limones street. . The remains of the terrace were preserved for future recovery.
To the south, this path continued towards Alicante and on both sides was the great Poble Nou cemetery, where tombs have been found since the 6th century BC. C. until the 5th century. With the discovery of this section of descent into the river, it was shown that the historic path of Alicante was this, and that the street of Alicante, in the Poble Nou neighborhood, only began to function as such when At the beginning of the 19th century, with the corsair danger already disappeared, an entrance was opened in the river wall in what is now Travesseret, to facilitate the circulation of people and to enter the city more directly avoiding the detour that the old road gave.
The well-known Camí del Peix ( fish street.) had its beginning in Calle Doctor Álvaro Esquerdo
The Vila Joiosa was isolated for centuries by land from the large population centers of the Kingdom of Valencia since it is built following the right bank of the river. The main way of communication with the lands of the interior and even Valencia was known as Camí Reial d'Orxeta, whose initial section would be the current Calle Doctor Álvaro Esquerdo. This road has become a place of continuous commercial transit since the 18th century.
Hundreds of horses circulated through it daily, coming and going exchanging raw materials and manufactured products with the large industrial center of Alcoi, from which La Vila was its commercial port until the end of the 19th century. This road was the limit of the Roman city and its entrance from Lucentum, and it surrounded the base of the great municipal baths of Allon.
